Ideas for working with the media
Media strategies and partnerships
Suggest a partnership between a leading media company and your volunteer organization: provide journalists with volunteer story ideas and actively encourage them to publish or broadcast the news.
Seek out celebrity support. Arrange interviews or participation at events where they can talk about their positive experiences as volunteers.
Hold a press conference to announce national volunteer initiatives or IVD activities.
Compile press kits on national volunteering initiatives and opportunities to distribute to journalists attending IVD events.
Organize radio or television broadcasts on volunteer issues.
Radio/Television
- Suggest outstanding volunteers as interview partners or panellists for radio or television shows.
- Distribute IVD public service announcements to radio or television stations along with background information related to the activity or event.
- Encourage radio stations to visit www.worldvolunteerweb.org to download and play volunteer songs in MP3 format.
- Invite broadcast journalists to visit volunteer projects on IVD.
- Send in media advisories, news releases and photo opportunities in advance of IVD events.
- Suggest documentaries on volunteerism or volunteer projects to radio or television news programmes.
Newspapers/Magazines
- Suggest volunteer stories to journalists who write human interest or development features.
- Invite journalists to visit and write about volunteer projects.
- Send media advisories and advise on photo opportunities well ahead of IVD events.
- Write and send in opinion articles or guest editorials to be featured on the op-ed (opposite editorial) pages of newspapers.
- Seek free advertising space in publications featuring news of community activities. Given existing conditions in many countries, a ready-made news release or article with photos is likely to be reproduced as submitted. Volunteer organizations should seize this opportunity to write up and distribute timely texts leading to positive publicity.
