IAVE Conference 2012 boon to Irish economy, says Sunday Business Post
Conferences bolster tourism sector; soft-funding still needed for completion
26th July 2010
A story in the Sunday Business Post reported the IAVE conference is projected to bring in €2.5 million to Ireland's economy.
The paper interviewed Volunteering Ireland's own chief executive Elaine Bradley, who secured Dublin as the location for the 2012 International Association Volunteer Effort (IAVE) biennial conference, to be held at the Dublin Convention Centre. It will bring " in a spend of €2.5 million," Elaine was quoted.
The following excerpt is from the Sunday Business Post story and can be read in full here: "Business ambassadors give tourism €33m boost"
"Bradley said she would ‘‘never have dreamt’’ of hosting such an event in Ireland before, but that the support and goodwill offered by all involved in the bid carried it over the line. ‘‘Ireland beat off the likes of Canada, America and South Africa to host this, and there was an unanimous vote by the IAVE to have it here," said Bradley.
She said that for the pitch, they had letters of support from high-profile individuals such as the Taoiseach, and they settled on a theme of human rights and dignity for the event.
'Ireland has people such as of Bono, Bob Geld of and Mary Robinson working for these causes. [We also] highlighted the beauty, diversity, history and culture that Ireland has to offer as a destination...We beat the competition hands down with this,' said Bradley.
Since the success of the bid, Bradley has formed a hosting committee that includes Fergus Finlay, Colm O’Gorman and Mary Davis - among other leading human rights advocates - and now needs to raise about €750,000 in ‘‘soft funding’’ to host the conference.

One Family Seeks Culwick Choral Christmas Volunteers
26th July 2010
One Family, Ireland's leading organisation for one-parent families, has been named as the benefiting charity for this year's Culwick Choral presentation of the Messiah at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 1 and 2 December. They are seeking volunteers to assist with ticket sales, program ad sales, VIP party organisation, logistics, public relations and marketing.
The volunteer committee will present individuals with an opportunity to network with others interested in music and the celebration surrounding Christmas. First committee meeting will be held in mid-August. Because it will have an event focus, it will be focused on phases leading up to the event (beginning, middle, end), with lots of fun in between and the ability to make a difference in the lives of those parenting alone or sharing parenting. A great opportunity for anyone wanting to get involved with a charity, on a fun project.

8th July 2010
Crowds protested health budget cuts Wednesday in Galway, Dublin, and Co Mayo, after it was reported that The Brothers of Charity - Galway warned of the imminent impact these cuts would have to frontline services, in as little as two weeks.
According to the Irish Times, "Minister of State with Responsibility for Disability John Moloney has insisted the Brothers of Charity Services in Galway will not have to reduce expenditure by a further €2 million this year.
A delegation from the Brothers of Charity Services Ireland met Minister for Health Mary Harney and Mr Moloney yesterday. A spokesman for the brothers said the meeting was to discuss an additional €2 million in cutbacks in Galway which the Health Service Executive had “indicated” last Friday. Afterwards, Mr Moloney confirmed “that will not go ahead”. He said there had never been an intention to target frontline services, particular respite care."
