Pilot Programme
Safeguard is currently working closely with six organisations to pilot and develop the programme. Its key aspects include:
• Evaluating the needs of pilot organisations
• Identifying processes that are already in place for screening and selecting volunteers
• Using this information to create tailored project plans and goals
• Developing standard procedures for the screening and selection process of volunteers
• Developing resources to support best practice
• Providing organisations with a framework for self-evaluation of screening and selection procedures
• Incorporating garda vetting into the process, as one of several steps for screening potential volunteers
Expansion of Services
After the pilot period, the Safeguard Programme will disseminate information about the outcome of the programme and develop a sustainable expansion of its services. Aspects of this stage include:
• Sharing the results with key government bodies and international development aid organisations
• Creating print materials, such as a Code of Practice, to provide guidelines and standards for the sector
• Creating a plan for the implementation of a wider and comprehensive programme to support organisations outside of the pilot six
• Spreading awareness about the program and the importance of developing best practice for overseas development agencies whose volunteers interact with vulnerable children and adults
• Working in partnership with key stakeholders, both nationally and internationally
